The First Cool Day

The day of the Autumn Equinox is here and it is the most pleasant we’ve had in a long while. What a hot summer this has been. It’s a day for changing our clothes over to our fall ones and not until now have I wanted to do it. Out come this season’s decorations too- glass pumpkins, gold-embroidered table runners and some with 3-D leaf effects, Japanese lantern pods with bittersweet in orange-y vases. We can still go out with our coffee and read in the mornings but a robe and slippers are now needed. A few remarks on Pumpkin Spice- it seems to be the thing now to decry it and equate it with all the wrong in the world- Couldn’t give two hoots! Coffee is a spice, anyway. Why not enrich it with a few more?

On Sunday, I thought I’d finish a September piece for the calendar I’ve been working on and have a bike ride – but- look who changed that plan- a perfectly posing little chipmunk who popped up as I watched our local fall sailing series. So- had to take the afternoon to make a sketch notation of that and keep up with the sketches I’m doing of the puppy while he’s still little. A puppy, you ask? Yes indeed- we are fortunate enough to be privy to the upbringing of a brand-new Newfoundland puppy who’s being called Winston, the long-awaited pet addition to the new-and-being-remodeled domicile of my brother and sister-in-law. Brave couple! (You bet there’ll be pix and sketches of him here.)

Tonight is the New Moon, coinciding this year with the time of equal days and nights, and, of course, Rosh Hashanah.

Welcome, Autumn.
